New CT cranes arrive next month

ANOTHER TANGIBLE move in the R4.2 billion redevelopment project at Cape Town Container Terminal is the June-end arrival of the first pair of eight super post-panamax cranes. Business unit executive Oscar Borchards confirmed to FTW on Monday that the R60 million-apiece cranes would arrive the weekend of June 28/29. They are being shipped by crane manufacturer Liebherr from the Irish port of Fenit on board the specialised chartered, German-flagged Beluga Constellation, a selfgeared vessel with two 240- ton cranes. They will come on deck, partially assembled, with loading to take around five days in Ireland and offloading in Cape Town about the same time frame. They will be assembled at berth 601 by a team of Liebherr and Transnet Port Terminals technicians, for completion around the end of October. The cranes are capable of lifting two 20-foot equivalents at a time and one 40-footer.
