The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has agreed to a proposal to introduce 1000 megawatt of new generation capacity into South Africa, in accordance with a cross-border procurement agreement.
It has accepted that these providers over the border within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will be drawing from a range of technologies or sources.
“The range of energy producers from the region will either be utilities from the host countries, or independent power producers that are legally operating within the host countries,” Nersa said in a statement.
The energy to be fed into the national grid in South Africa will be procured by Eskom which will enter into agreements with different entities or countries.
The energy regulator allows for up to 2000MW of new generation capacity and this procurement is part of that. SOURCE: SAnews.gov.za
