Robert Mugabe, African Union chairperson and president of Zimbabwe, has called on the southern African region to stop the export of Africa’s unprocessed raw materials, and focus on industrialisation and mineral beneficiation.
Speaking at the 33rd Nepad Heads of State and Government Summit in Sandton, Johannesburg over the weekend, Mugabe reportedly urged African members of state to promote mineral beneficiation in the region.
He said Africa could industrialise at a much faster pace compared to other regions.
Delivering the opening address at the summit, President Jacob Zuma said African countries had developed the confidence to tackle the considerable challenges still facing them.
Zuma said Nepad had kept alive “the dream and potential of Africa, which is now reaping the benefit of macroeconomic management and deeper engagement with the world economy”.
