THE 1972-built container ship MSC Rosemary (24 602gt), which was crippled by an engine room fire while in the Durban dry dock on December 16, 2000, departed from Durban this month bound for an appointment with the breakers at Alang, India.
One man lost his life in the fire, which was so fierce it required the services
of the Durban Fire Department to extinguish. The result of the enquiry has not yet been made known although it is believed the fire was a result of the accidental setting alight of bilge waste.
The ship, which was covered in patches of red antirust paint from its date in the dry dock, left under its own power.
