MSC celebrates its quarter century

MEDITERRANEAN SHIPPING Company celebrated its 25th anniversary with fanfare in Johannesburg last week.
A praise singer added to the African flavour of the event, recounting the history of the line which was founded in 1970 with one
4 200 ton vessel and which now operates in excess of 240 container vessels with an intake capacity of 622 759 TEUs.
Chairman Captain Salvatore Sarno used the occasion to cast the spotlight on the Shosholoza, South Africa’s entry into the America’s Cup. “We want to be part of the African renaissance - our aim is to show the world what South Africa can do,” he said.
And referring to the scheduled arrival of three new cranes in the port of Durban next May, he offered some good news to customers who had turned out in force to celebrate the milestone. “We hope that the new cranes will allow us to lift the congestion surcharge.”
