More shippers say container weighing rule ‘too vague’

A letter signed by a number of shipping executive members of the Global Consolidators Working Group and sent to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), has said that the impending container weighing rule is too vague to implement, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The rule, created by the Safety of Life at Sea (Solas) initiative, is to come into effect on July 1.

By verifying the weight of a container, the legislation is intended to stop any cases of ships being imbalanced – whether that is due to a container being underweight or overweight.

But, said the letter: “The lack of information, transparency and guidance makes it nearly impossible (and certainly impractical) for shippers to implement necessary arrangements to comply properly.”
