More crane breakdowns lead to 88-hour delay in CT

RAY SMUTS AS THE Cape Town shipping community expectantly awaits a government decision on the proposed R1 billion container terminal extension, the urgency of new equipment cannot be sufficiently underscored following a further two crane break-downs, coupled with bad weather, which delayed at least one vessel for close on 90 hours earlier this month. Worst hit was the Arnis which experienced a berthing delay of 62.8 hours. By the time she discharged 75 boxes and loaded 49, her total delay at the time of sailing on June 7 was 88 hours. Other delays ranged from 24 to 51 hours. Unlike the newer Noel crane which packed up at quay 602 during the last weekend of May but was back in operation at the appointed time, the terminal’s four Demags are more than 25 years old.
