Bill requires industry to
generate national standards
and qualifications
THE SKILLS Development Bill requires urgent input from the maritime industry, says the Cargo Handling sector of the Maritime Industry Training Board (MITB).
The Bill requires industry to generate national standards and qualifications, says Brad Jacklin, outgoing executive for MITB-CH. The Freight Handling Standards Generation project has achieved great success with participation from trade unions, training providers and organisations that represent the freight handling industry of South Africa. He says that an extensive interest has been shown and commitment received from a wide range of stakeholders, including warehousing and distribution, port operations, the cold chains, bulk storage and aerospace sectors.
However, the success of this project depends on contributions from as wide a range of industries and interested parties as possible. MITB-CH invites all associated industries and interested parties to take part in the process of drafting National Standards for the Freight Handling Industry in South Africa.
Jacklin, who recently resigned from the MITB to take up an appointment with the Spar Group, is assisting with the process until his permanent replacement is found. In the meantime Rennies has seconded John Abercrombie to 'hold the fort' until a new appointment has been made.
