Transport minister, Joe Maswanganyi, has expressed his frustration over the slow pace of transformation in South Africa’s maritime sector.
He noted that although policy interventions were already helping to transform the industry, a lot of work still needed to be done to transform the industry to be representative of the South African population.
“[The] maritime [sector] should not be seen as something that is far-fetched by our people; we want to take maritime to our people for them to be in the mainstream of that economy,” said Maswanganyi.
He added that government needed to determine how to ensure that coastal communities were able to benefit from the oceans economy initiative pushed by government under Operation Phakisa.
