As opportunities for increased bulk cargo volumes emerge, driven by the expansion and revival of mining activities locally and regionally, logistics companies are enhancing their operational footprints across the region. According to Gloudie Olivier, commercial manager at Pindulo Logistics, the company is particularly focused on bolstering its presence at the strategically located Port of Walvis Bay.“Pindulo now boasts a bulk under-roof storage facility inside the port, complemented by a back-of-port storage facility that serves as a terminal for breakbulk and containerised cargo,” said Olivier. “This dual-facility approach allows us to offer a comprehensive suite of services, effectively bridging the gap between various cargo types and providing clients with all-in-one logistics solutions.”The bulk cargo sector in southern Africa faces a unique set of challenges, including infrastructure limitations, complex regulatory environments, market volatility, and growing environmental concerns. Olivier emphasised that it was crucial for companies to offer end-to-end solutions and regional expertise while integrating technology to maintain a competitive edge in the market.Pindulo Logistics remains focused on delivering bespoke and innovative solutions. The company has introduced patent skips for bulk loading operations at the Port of Walvis Bay, significantly improving loading efficiency, cargo handling speed and environmental protection during operations.“The future of the bulk cargo market looks bright, with new mine openings in Namibia and significant expansion in countries like Zambia, Botswana, the DRC and Zimbabwe,” she said. “This regional growth is expected to drive increased demand for logistics services. We are excited about the overall outlook for bulk cargo. As the market evolves, we're committed to staying ahead of the curve, providing our clients with efficient, effective and innovative solutions.”Olivier added that staying up to date with sector trends, including the rapid digitalisation and automation of operations, was essential. “The demand for all-in-one solutions, offering pit-to-port or port-to-pit services, exemplifies the industry's shift towards integrated logistics models. Our investment in technology and our ability to offer end-to-end services put us at the forefront of this trend.”
