Metrorail has suspended services between Johannesburg and Randfontein after a passenger train collided with a freight train last night killing one person and injuring four.
The accident happened at the Horizon View Station in Roodepoort.
Lungi Mahlango, a duty manager at Transnet Freight Rail, said that a freight train was able to carry up to 50 containers, “but I cannot confirm at this point what goods were being transported and how much or if there was damage to the goods”.
“Investigators are combing the scene of the crash to try and work out what happened,” said Metrorail.
The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa has urged commuters to make alternative transport arrangements. The line is expected to be operational by Saturday, February 15.
