Mega-carrier orders multiply

THE NUMBER of 8 000 TEU vessels ordered around the world now numbers 78 - adding capacity of 632701 TEU, according to the UK information and research firm CRS quoted in the latest Schednet report. Eleven are due for delivery in 2005. Add the 7 000 TEU vessels and, according to CRS, the number of mega-carriers stands at 100 - 34% of the newbuildings on order. However, CRS calculates that the amount of cargo increases by 7%-8% annually - enough for the market to absorb the additional capacity
