Medupi milestone

President Jacob Zuma
officially launched the full
commercial operation of
Unit 6 of the Medupi Power
Station at Lephalale in
Limpopo on Sunday.
The commercial
operation will see an
additional 794 megawatts
being fed into the national
power grid, according
to power utility Eskom
who hailed this as a
“milestone”. It certainly
provides a welcome relief
to business and industry
which have seen a drop in
manufacturing output over
the past year due to power
constraints.
During the launch, Zuma
acknowledged that the
country’s energy constraints
were an impediment to
economic growth and that
overcoming this challenge
was one of government’s top
priorities.
He added that the
Medupi construction, due
for completion in 2017,
would grow the country’s
GDP by approximately
0.35% per year.
