Mbeki gives MIDP assurances

THE FUTURE of the Motor Industry Development Programme is critical to future investment decisions by Volkswagen SA, MD Andreas Tostmann said at the opening of the company’s R750m paint shop in Uitenhage at the weekend. Speaking at the event, president Thabo Mbeki emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the automotive sector to see it grow, employ more workers and increase wages. Referring to the revised MIDP, Mbeki said that government would not abandon the programme. Instead, the modifications would be based on providing the necessary support to the automotive sector and would be completed in a manner consistent global agreements.
