MARCH 1 is D-day for “old” Airports Company SA permits, traditionally used by airlines and cargo handlers to identify drawers and deliverers of goods in the cargo area of OR Tambo International Airport.
That’s the date on which their validity expires and access will only be granted on presentation of the new Air Cargo Permit.
An alternative option for companies who decide not to go this route is to issue their drivers with original letters, on their letterheads, giving names and identification numbers of the people nominated to draw or deliver goods.
A new letter will be required for each visit to each airline or cargo handler, clearly stating the relevant house airwaybill numbers for collection.
“The new system is state of the art and will provide benefits to all organisations with an interest in cargo security, from airlines and cargo handlers to Acsa, Sars Customs and clearing and forwarding agents,” says Saaff executive officer Chris Richards. “There are also likely benefits to be derived from the system when Regulation Part 108 of the Civil Aviation Act comes into play in a few months time,” he said.
But to make use of the new permit system requires time, says Richards. “Companies have to register themselves and also apply for permits – which then have to be made. A number of days are needed to complete the process.”
The new permits have been introduced by the Air Cargo Operators’ Committee with the support of Saaff which has urged its members to “get on board as soon as possible”.
