Malawian supply chain threatened as protesters take to the streets

Agents handling freight in and out of Malawi have warned of possible supply chain disruption because of anticipated protest action.

An email sent to FTW reads: “Please be aware that protesters in Malawi are threatening to shut down the country with a planned three-day stay-away” from today.

The civil action is in protest “against certain government policies that were implemented after the May 2019 elections”.

Apparently protesters have warned that the intended disruption to commerce in the landlocked country will include all physical borders as well as airports.

The Malawian government has in the meantime “threatened strong action against protesters who in turn have vowed to fight back and extend the stay away if their calls for change go unanswered”.

One company that expressed its concern about what was happening in Malawi was Transtech Logistics.

They have advised all customers of the potential impact on cargo planned for despatch or in transit.

They said while the safety of the internal situation was assessed, goods would be kept at Mwanza and Dedza border posts until such time as the security of drivers, related personnel and cargo could be guaranteed.
