Major illicit ivory bust at OR Tambo

SA customs officials at the Oliver Tambo International Airport (Ortia) cargo section have seized a shipment of 267 kilograms of ivory, estimated to be worth over R4-million, being moved from Zimbabwe to Vietnam.

According to customs, reported Voice of America (VOA) Zimbabwe, the officials discovered “un-cleared ivory tusks among shredded papers in some sealed boxes at the airport”.

No details were given in the press reports reviewed before publishing time of the contents of any freight documents accompanying the shipment.

South African Revenue Service (Sars) spokesperson, Luther Lebelo, said this consignment  was one of the biggest ever ivory busts in the country.
