LUDERITZ BAY harbour has its first mobile crane. The 64-ton unit, commissioned this week by the Namibian Ports Authority (Namport), is a major addition to the harbour workforce, where all operations in the past had to rely on the smaller rail-mounted crane which will continue to be used. Luderitz will not have access to the services of the tug purchased by Namport from South Africa's Portnet which previously served in Port Elizabeth. This vessel, which arrived in Walvis Bay last March, now remains in that harbour and has been renamed 'Onyati' (water buffalo). It gives Walvis Bay two large sized tugs in addition to the two medium sized and two small tugs in the harbour. Luderitz Bay has two large and two medium size tugs in operation.
