South African wine producers have earmarked Russia as a potential export destination, with a host of local producers set to showcase their products at the Prodexpo-2020 International Food Exhibition in Moscow, Russia from February 10-14.
Malcolm Green, a Western Cape-based “winepreneur”, said Prodexpo presented the perfect opportunity for local producers to expand their reach into the international market.
“We expect to meet importers and buyers and obtain wine market research and to position La RicMal and Lerato wine brands in the Russian market.”
Managing director for Trajan Wines South Africa, Mark van Schalkwyk, said his company could offer the Russian market a wide-range of wines that were specifically produced to suit their palate.
“We have secured importers in China, Japan and Peru by attending the Department of Trade and Industry’s (dti) national pavilions and missions in the past. We are currently in discussions with one of the Russian importers who wants to import their first container load of wines from us.”
The mission to Prodexpo, which is the largest international show for the food and drinks sector in Russia and Eastern Europe, is funded through the dti’s Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) Scheme. – Bjorn Vorster
