In the past decade, CMA CGM has managed a 50% improvement in its CO2 performance for its owned fleet.
Today, the measure for each container transported shows it emits approximately 60 grammes of CO2 per kilometre, compared to 120g in 2005. The best-performing ships (the fuel-efficient megas) only emit 37g.
Shipping today is the most environmentally friendly transport mode: it is 70 times less polluting than flight transportation, said CMA CGM.
According to the line, measures to reduce their emissions include improved vessel hydrodynamics in their fleet; new vessels equipped with the latest on board systems (like fast oil recovery and ballast water treatment); the Fleet Navigation and Support Centre (which optimises routes, speeds and fuel consumption); and use of environmentally friendly containers - like 30 000 reefer containers with low consumption engines and bamboo-floored to save wood from valuable tropical species.
