‘Leaner, meaner’ container line cuts back on fleet expansion

Maersk Line is dropping plans to purchase new mega-ships as part of a series of cost-cutting measures in the wake of its adjusted profit forecast.

“We are in the process of transforming Maersk Line to make the organisation simpler and leaner. We want to improve the online experience of clients and at the same time work as efficiently as possible," said Maersk group chief executive, Soren Skou, in a statement.

This move follows the announcement last week that the group had slashed its profit forecast by US$600 million to US$3.4bn for 2015, compared to its earlier estimate of US$4 billion.

The Danish company is also set to shed 4 000 jobs – out of a total of 23 000 – in its Maersk Line unit by the end of 2017.
