Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) in Richards Bay has issued a warning to its customers of “expected disruptions on national roads”.
TPT says it has been advised by the SA Police Service that the All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF) and affiliates are planning to halt truck movements over the weekend in its ongoing illegal endeavours to randomly interfere with road freight flows.
According to TPT, the ATDF – which advocates for job protectionism in South Africa’s road transport industry, often through violent means – is expected to blockade highways and byways by using hijacked trucks.
This is “in order to intensify the pressure on government to address their grievance with the use of foreign truck drivers by South African trucking companies”.
TPT added: “The N3 and N2 are historically targeted and there may also be disruptive actions at the Durban and Richards Bay ports.
“Contingency measures have been implemented by the various security clusters. This includes continuous vehicle patrols and high visibility on our roads by law-enforcement officers.
“Clients making use of road transport for the transportation of commodities to the Port of Richards Bay are advised to proceed with caution and, if possible, rather hold back transport during the weekend.”
The warning comes in the wake of ATDF action reported in Richards Bay earlier this week (see related store here: https://tinyurl.com/yc4a3ekm).
