Kiln upgrade marks cement plant’s expansion

KwaZulu-Natal’s sole cement producer has completed the upgrade to its kiln at its Simuma Plant in Port Shepstone.

Natal Portland Cement (NPC) aims to boost clinker and cement production to meet rising demand in KZN and beyond, increasing cement production capacity from 1.5 million to 2.8m tonnes per annum.

Since its acquisition by China’s Huaxin Group in December 2023, NPC has benefited from a R1bn investment commitment to drive its expansion.
Huaxin Group president, Li Yeqing, said the company was on a growth trajectory.

“The Simuma Expansion is a testament to Huaxin’s commitment to strengthen and grow the NPC brand in South Africa. The investment in the latest and most modern technology will help NPC increase its production capacity and grow its market share,” he said.

Yeqing added that the investment extended beyond production, aiming to boost local economic development and set a new benchmark for sustainability.

NPC operates three cement plants, a limestone quarry, two aggregate mines, and six ready-mix concrete operations across Durban, Port Shepstone and Newcastle, employing over 450 permanent staff and 500 contractors in KZN.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality mayor Zodwa Mzindle said the development represented a new chapter in the community’s economic journey.

“This plant symbolises the spirit of innovation, progress and collaboration. It showcases our region’s potential to attract investment,” Mzindle said.
