THE SHIPPING line Kien Hung has made a successful start to its own agency representation in SA, according to Mark Shih, director of the United Ships Agency.
When Polaris terminated our agency agreement, we had only four weeks in which to establish our own offices in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, he said.
But we were able to complete this task, and received our first ship at the end of February. Since then, we have been able to handle the weekly sailings of both north and southbound vessels.
Shih also highlights the fact that United Ships Agency has a fully-computerised office environment. It gives us an almost immediate and on-line response to any queries, he said.
The line's southbound service has a port rotation of Singapore, Hong Kong, Keelung, Busan, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santos. It returns along the same route, with an additional port of call in Lanchabung (Bangkok).
We can also offer our SA customers a service to the west coast of South America, Shih told FTW. This we do by transhipping via Hong Kong - with the onward run through Long Beach in California, then to Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Peru and Chile.
