Government often appears to speak with a forked-tongue on the subject of privatisation of state assets, according to Peter Meihuizen. But, he said, I feel there is little doubt that - over the next 3-to-5 years - a substantial proportion of these assets will be privatised. Amongst those that will be partially or wholly privatised will probably be most divisions of Transnet - most notably Portnet. How this occurs will obviously have a major impact on the forwarding industry.

This will require a pro-active role amongst the main players in the industry sector, Meihuizen added.

Extreme care will have to be exercised to ensure that all stake holders are able to participate in the privatisation in an equitable way, he said. SAAFF will have to ensure that it plays an influential role in any such privatisation exercise.
