Kenyan port sees boost in cargo volumes

Infrastructure imports and mineral exports boosted activity at the Port of Mombasa in Kenya in the first half of the year and the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has subsequently posted an 11.2% increase in performance.

Total cargo offloaded has increased from 160 000 tonnes handled in the corresponding period last year to 284 00 tonnes.

KPA corporate services manager, Gichiri Ndua, said improvements in the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and Djibouti would not affect KPA as they operated on different corridors.

He said Djibouti operated the Northern-Northern corridor serving South Sudan. Kenya has, however, to compete with Dar es Salaam to serve the Rwanda, Burundi and Congo hinterland.

Ndua said that the KPA had been gaining market share over the port of Djibouti in South Sudan due to its increased capacity.

In addition he noted that container vessels were maintaining an improved average ship turnaround time of 3.4 days, while general cargo vessels improved to 3.6 days in 2015, compared with 4.6 days registered in 2014.
