DAR ES Salaam's container terminal, which was privatised six months ago, has already shown a 40% improvement in container moves.
The CEO of Tanzania International Container Terminal Services, Jan Mors, who was previously a senior executive at Portnet in South Africa, said the terminal was aiming at 250 000 TEUs annually, up from the present volume of 125 000. He said the port had also reduced storage time for containers from 60 days to 21 days, which was helping to speed up operations and delivery.
ICTSI signed a 10-year contract to operate the container terminal in April, although this only became operational in September, becoming the sub-continent's first privately operated container terminal. About US$3million has so far been spent on upgrading the port's facilities, including the acquisition of 11 tractors and 20 trailers for the movement of TEUs from ship to storage at Kurasini inland container depot.
