Intertanko, the international tanker owners’ association, has responded to Nigeria’s apparent relaxation of its tanker ban, and strongly advised its members against having banned ships trading to Nigeria.
This despite a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) letter appearing to welcome the return of banned ships.
It follows Intertanko being absolutely livid and issuing what it diplomatically-termed “a strong protest” against Nigeria’s July decision to ban 113 tankers from its coast, supposedly as part of an effort to crack down on illegal crude oil trading.
The tanker body also stressed that some ships on the banned list had not traded with Nigeria in years, and many had not ever traded to the West African nation.
It all indicates that Intertanko has thoroughly lost its trust, thanks to the haphazard behaviour of the Nigerian authorities.
“Owners should proceed with caution as much still needs to be addressed,” said the disgruntled association.
