IT’S A SIGN of things to come – an online internet-based system in the freight industry that logs and monitors staff all the time. It’s designed both to improve productivity and to motivate staff by seeing they get paid properly and promptly. Labour broker Stefan Botha, MD of Staff-at-a-Click, has a vision of capturing the whole freight industry. “That’s our goal,” he said this week, speaking from his Edenvale offices. “We provide a logging and monitoring system for every level of personnel, their histories, their presence on the job, and their correct rates of pay and when payments are due to them.” Associated company Sizanani Logistics, a group that serves the freight industry, developed the online software used by Staff-at-a-Click. Botha argues that it is comfortable for most employers to handle up to 20 staff at a time “but once dealing with 20 to 80 staff you need more controls. “Our on-line system is designed to ensure the client’s operating needs are met. In freight, distribution is money. If a driver is late or has problems, you need to know immediately. “You can’t maintain a motivated workforce if you can’t pay them on time and pay them correctly. In the freight industry in particular there is no consistency in knowing at any one time where people are working. The employer needs to be spot on to ensure a motivated workforce. This provides support to the employee.” Botha’s company currently focuses on the management of semi-skilled blue collar workers in the freight industry, finding heavy duty and forklift-drivers, picking packers and scanners on demand, and often sourcing labour for seasonal needs. “It’s going exceptionally well in a booming industry in Gauteng,” he said.
