A 90% competency rate in the training of 1 523 men and women in the freight and shipping industry is the training record achieved by the privately-owned School of Shipping, according to senior lecturer Brett Moore. “In addition to top-level learners, the School has also trained large numbers of unemployed workers in the past six years who have been absorbed into the industry,” says Moore. To achieve the best results in Outcomes-Based Training, in-company training brings together a mix of staff from different business units such as warehousing, buying or merchandising, logistics, shipping, clearing and forwarding as well as suppliers. “This makes it easier to educate and learn from each other and to reach realistic goals. “Although we are based in Cape Town, we offer training in all major centres as well as other African countries,” The School is a further Education and Training (FET) institution and registered with the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) with its assessors and its candidate moderator duly accredited. Its professional range of courses includes international trade, supply chain management, import and export procedures and customs clearing and forwarding in the international environment. Training is provided either at the School’s premises on Cape Town’s Foreshore, or in-house. “Our premises now offer magnificent views over the Waterfront and past the breakwater, as well as Table Mountain and Duncan Dock and the Container Terminal – what better way to experience learning than with views of a working sea port!” says Moore.
