YEARS OF strategic planning and investment in infrastructure and vehicles are paying dividends for road transport major Ikamiji Freight.
As it continues to strengthen its foothold on the highly volatile overborder market, its mission is clear-cut. It will continue to focus on its key route, Mozambique, while concentrating solely on its core customers in Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
"Mozambique now accounts for 80% of our business," says managing director Kevin Gesseau.
"In Mozambique we offer a fully comprehensive service, concentrating on cargo moving through our warehouse."
Ikamiji's City Deep warehouse is playing an increasingly important role in its expanded service portfolio.
The company relocated to bigger premises in May this year, and this included a
5 000 square metre warehouse, completely covered and ventilated.
The facility is used for consolidations as well as full truck loads and has gained increasing acceptance as a hub for Cape Town and Durban customers moving goods overborder.
"It adds value for our customers," says Gesseau, who is delighted at having recently secured a contract for the movement of all Mica products from South Africa to the hardware company's new Mozambique store. Mica has just opened the biggest Mica franchise in southern Africa in Mozambique, comprising a two-storey warehouse.
Ikamiji will manage the logistics chain from its
City Deep warehouse to Mozambique. It has installed a sophisticated warehouse management system to manage the throughput of goods on a supply and demand basis.
Ikamiji has further tied up with a clearing agent in Mozambique providing its customers with an outsourced clearing and forwarding service all under the Ikamiji banner.
The company currently offers four guaranteed services a week on the Mozambique route, with additional frequencies based on demand.
An increase in groupage traffic has been a recent trend.
