How to simplify temporary import red tape

IMPORTERS BRINGING items into the country on a temporary basis will save a lot of frustration through the use of the ATA Carnet, a system which simplifies the temporary importation of goods into the countries that accept it.

That's the advice from Safcor, which points out that the system is also ideal for exporters sending samples overseas, or for sale and return consignments.

The system eliminates or simplifies the customs clearing process in the country of destination. At the same time the necessity for lodging deposits with the customs authorities falls away.

In South Africa the SA Chamber of Business is the issuing and guarantee authority.

The cost of an ATA Carnet ranges from R750 to R1500 and is based on the value of the goods covered by it. In addition a suitable guarantee for 50% of the value of the goods is required.

Carnets have a one-year validity and offer unlimited admission of the goods for that period to countries which recognise it.
