Homegrown tracker attracts export interest

LOCAL EXPERTISE in vehicle tracking and fleet management is making an international impact, with requests for a homegrown fleet management system flowing in from Germany, Australia, Eastern Europe, Russia and Francophone Africa.
That's according to Paul McKibbin, head of Siemens Mobile Networks in South Africa, who says that the Siemens DuO vehicle tracking and fleet management system, based on tried and tested GSM and GPS technology can be adapted for use wherever there is a GSM network.
He draws a clear distinction between straight vehicle tracking products, which abound in crime-ridden South Africa, and systems such as DuO which incorporate security as a given component.
Last August, Siemens announced a strategic alliance with DuO Solutions Provider (DuO SP), a specialist company which has set up a national network of outlets providing the fleet operator with a one-stop bureau service. The bureau designs tailor-made service packages for an all-inclusive fee ranging from R40 per vehicle per day, and assumes full responsibility for the effective functioning of the system, ranging from the supply and installation of all on-board equipment to round-the-clock provision of all services associated with vehicle management and security.
