IT WAS a double win for Transnet at the recent SA Logistics Achiever Awards 2002. While Viamax Logistics was named overall winner for its famine relief operation to SADC countries, Spoornet business unit Orex was a joint winner. Viamax put its fourth-party logistics service expertise to the test, facilitating significant improvements in logistical processes within the Port of East London and an over 40% improvement in wagon turnaround time within Spoornet to ensure that drought relief maize reached 14 million people in affected countries. Orex transports 25-million tons of export iron ore annually, operating an 861km railway line between Sishen in the Northern Cape and Saldanha on the Western Cape coast. ItÕs the first time that Transnet has secured first place and the first time in the 12-year history of the awards that black-empowered companies have won the accolade.
