THE REGULAR shipment, intra-Africa, of millions of empty beverage cans is almost routine for Safmarine compared with other parcels that the line has managed.
According to logistics manager Paul Zunckel, a recent interesting and unusual challenge for the line’s logistics experts was the through-transportation - from an inland point of origin - of two complete aircraft to a destination half way round the world.
The aircraft were not airworthy and had to be transported over a thousand kilometres of road. In places the abnormal load needed to bypass low bridges and power lines, but solving these problems and many others was all in a day’s work for the team at Safmarine.
