LEONARD NEILL THE HEAD of Namibia’s Comav Aviation Company, Danie van der Merwe, was killed when his own helicopter crashed on his farm near Windhoek recently after striking a power line. Comav flies a fleet of small aircraft, two of which are dedicated freighters which fly a regular five-days-a-week schedule between Windhoek and Johannesburg International Airport. Each can carry a full load of one and a half tons. Van der Merwe had flown two visitors to the Hosea Kutako International Airport, 40km from Windhoek, and was returning to his farm when the accident occurred. Investigators believe that he saw movement on the ground and dropped in altitude to see if it was from poachers who had been reported in the area. A management committee has been appointed to ensure the smooth operation of the company, and all flights are reported to have taken off on schedule.
