Bulk terminal adds significant warehouse space
TERRY HUTSON
GRINDROD’S KUSASA Bulk Terminal at Richards Bay will benefit from significant capital investment in the near future, says Grindrod director Laurence Stuart-Hill. In the past 12 months the acquisition of Sea Munye Port Holdings provided Kusasa with much needed additional warehousing within a short distance of the port, as well as the expertise of experienced staff. The Sea Munye facility consists of four main warehouses in excess of 17 000m2 to provide more than 50 000 tonnes of under-cover storage of bulk materials. The warehousing includes a blending and bagging plant for fertilisers which is currently in extensive use. The facility also has another 15 000m2 of uncovered hard standing storage and several hectares of coke fields for a quite unique facility close to the port. Stuart-Hill revealed that the Kusasa warehousing facility would soon be connected with the port by conveyor belt enabling vessel loading of 2 000t per hour. The new warehouse will have a footprint of 10 000m2 providing 55 000m3 of covered warehousing capacity. The Valley Terminal Warehouse marks the beginning of the second major development of Grindrod in Richards Bay. The development takes place on a piece of land adjacent to the port with the import and export conveyor system of the Dry Bulk Terminal of Sapo ending on this land.
