Records, so it is said, are there to be broken, so it will be of interest to see how long this particular ‘record’ lasts - the largest ship to berth in Mossel Bay. The southern Cape port is limited by its draught and entrance width and as a rule nothing much larger than a fishing trawler or service boat calls there. Tankers loading oil make use of two offshore moorings, but with recent developments in gas and oil in the region it was inevitable that heavy project type cargo would at some time be delivered by ship, and that is what has happened in the past week. Mainport Africa Shipping recently handled the biggest vessel ever to call at Mossel Bay, the Beluga Recommendation, which called to discharge the heaviest piece of equipment at the port, a transformer for an equipment upgrade by Eskom, measured at 226 tonnes.
