Work is proceeding at a rapid rate on the deepening of the quayside section of East London’s car terminal to allow for the berthing of larger ro-ro vessels. The contractors are now well ahead of their December deadline, according to National Ports Authority officials, with the depth alongside the quay to go from 9m to 10,7m. A record number of 14 car carriers called at the port during the past month to offload and load vehicles of different types and sizes.
