George Young goes off watch

TERRY HUTSON GEORGE YOUNG, the noted Cape Town shipping writer, journalist and author of books, passed away peacefully on Sunday night, May 30, 2004, just one month short of his 88th birthday. As shipping editor of the Cape Times for 43 years he earned his reputation as the doyen of South Africa’s investigative journalists, a man who pulled no punches with his pen but at all times remained thoroughly professional and honest to his trade. Over seven decades he kept us informed of the comings, goings and happenings of maritime activity In another life George Young was a JP, a Christian preacher and youth worker and a community parole officer. Many a troubled young person who came under his influence went on to achieve better things in life. The shipping world has lost one of its truly great figures. Wherever he is gone, one can be sure that George Young will find a way to gaze down on his beloved Table Bay. RIP George Young.
