General Motors jacks up exports

Contract for 3m
carjacks to US,
writes Ed Richardson

DELTA MOTOR Corporation, in conjunction with Bosal Automotive in Pretoria, has been awarded an R84 million extension to its contract to manufacture and supply jacks to General Motors.
Delta's director of export and allied Business, Andre van Rooyen, says the order was awarded on the basis of Bosal's successful execution of a R64 million order placed with the company in 1994.
Under the new contract Bosal is to supply more than three million carjacks
for four years to General Motors' North American Operations.
Car jacks were one of our original export orders gained to the United States and complements our approach which is supplying high value added products with high packing densities to the export market, says van Rooyen.
This contract has also made a breakthrough for South African component exporters in that a significant quantity of the carjacks will be supplied to GM-based plants in Mexico for the first time. The carjacks will be supplied out of warehousing facilities established in the United States and we are optimistic about future opportunities in these markets.
With international vehicle manufacturers embarking on global sourcing programmes, this order opens the way to further export opportunities for Bosal, he added.
