Gemini consistently more punctual – Sea-Intelligence

The relatively new Gemini Cooperation shipping alliance, launched earlier this year, has reported consistently high schedule reliability, Sea-Intelligence has found.

According to the ocean freight analysis platform, which incorporates Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, Gemini has outperformed its competitors in scheduling segments, trade carrying calls and AA, which generally include blank sailings meant to shore up flagging rates.

While specific percentages for the first quarter of 2025 are not publicly detailed in the available sources, the Danish company and its German partner have consistently ranked among the top carriers for schedule reliability in the first quarter.

Sea-Intelligence reported Gemini’s AA rate for the first quarter of this year as 90.3% and 85.7% for trade.

In January, just before exciting its 2M alliance with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Maersk achieved a schedule reliability of 55.0%, the highest among the top 13 carriers for the month year-on-year.

In comparison, MSC, which opted out of any vessel-sharing agreements because of its container fleet capacity – the world’s largest at 889 vessels – experienced fluctuations in schedule reliability.

Last September, its schedule reliability declined by 21.5% year-on-year.

According to Sea-Intelligence, the Swiss line’s schedule reliability fell to 51.4% in general.

MSC is apparently only at 75.8% for AA and 74.4% for trade in February and March.

The Premier Alliance, comprising Ocean Network Express, Yang Ming and HMM, which was formed out of the now defunct THE Alliance after Hapag-Lloyd joined Maersk to form Gemini, reported the lowest schedule reliability figures.

Since 2023, THE Alliance’s schedule reliability, then recorded as 43.1%, continues to lag behind.

Sea-Intelligence didn’t provide specific first quarter figures for Premier Alliance but the alliance, minus Hapag-Lloyd, has historically trailed behind others in schedule reliability, according to the platform’s recorded data.

The Premier Alliance reported 53.2% for AA and 51.2% across all trade arrivals.

Overall, the data suggests that the Gemini Cooperation has maintained higher schedule reliability compared to MSC and the Premier Alliance.
