A fuel economy tour designed to gauge ‘real-world’ fuel consumption figures has added a charitable element to the event with seven of the vehicle brands joining forces to donate R100 000 worth of books and sports equipment to two rural schools.

40 commercial vehicles will compete in the maiden WesBank South African Fuel Economy Tour which will cover a 2 500km-route from Johannesburg to Cape Town. Honda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Suzuki and Toyota have all joined forces to provide the schools with a library of books, soccer and netball kits, and other equipment scarce in rural communities as part of the Rally to READ educational project – Bjorn Vorster
