An unused shipping container’s conversion into a colourful, multipurpose ‘sports centre’ is allowing aspiring young soccer players in the Western Cape town of Piketberg to live out their dreams. Earlier this year, Star South – which exports fruit from South Africa to Europe, the Middle East and Far East – invited Safmarine to support its ‘Stars in their Eyes Foundation’. Safmarine responded by donating a retired shipping container which could be used as much-needed infrastructure in the Foundation’s community upliftment programme in Piketberg, a programme that benefits over 100 children. Using soccer as a catalyst, the focus is on mentoring community leaders to make a positive difference in their communities.
Fruitful partnership of hope
