Freight rate lowered to support French households

The CMA CGM Group has decided to implement targeted measures to contribute to efforts intended to curb increases in consumer prices for households in France.

These are determined in consultation with the Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty.

As part of the measures, the group is set to grant its distributor customers a reduction of €500 (R8 517) per 12-metre container for consumer goods imported via French ports. According to Logistics Update Africa, the reduction represents a 10-20% decrease in the freight rate, depending on the destination.

The reduction will come into effect from August 1 and last for one year. It applies to all cargo imported into France through French ports, as well as to French overseas territories.

Leading expert in the industry, Lars Jensen, noted in a post on LinkedIn that it was still unclear how the rate reduction would be implemented.

In September 2021, a freeze was placed on further rate increases. This is also still in place. The freeze was also implemented from May 2021 for French overseas territories.
