First coal export from the Mozambique Port of Nacala.

A first, token delivery of 50 tonnes of coal has been exported from the new Nacala-a-Velha coal terminal in Mozambique.

This is keeping up the Vale group’s promise that the new R55 billion, 900-kilometre railway between Moatize and Nacala-a-Velha it is building in partnership with the Mozambican state port and railway company CFM, would get underway in 2015.

The line and terminal are due to be running up to speed by August.

The plan is that, by 2017, when the port reaches its installed capacity, it will export 22 million tonnes of coal per year. Until then it will export 18mts of coal a year.

Rolling stock to reach the desired levels will total 89 locos and 1 862 wagons.
