FEDERAL EXPRESS has opened an operation in Richards Bay, bringing the port into its global network spanning the entire African continent and more than 210 countries and territories around the world.
We've been keeping a close watch on the growth in number of Richards Bay express packages passing through our Durban hub, says account executive Ermelinde Mondriaan. For some time Richards Bay businesses have been asking for an on-the-spot presence and this has now become viable.
Richards Bay, says Mondriaan, is home to a vigorous manufacturing community which gives rise to a large number of urgent and important export packages. These range from components, spare parts and materials to high-tech items. The busy harbour is also a major user of express imports. It is often dependent on overnight receipt of items such as ships' spares and customs and other documentation.
For exporters, striking a deal is often dependent on delivering items faster than competitors, says Mondriaan. Speed is also critical in supporting customers with urgently needed spare parts. FedEx links Richards Bay with the world on a time-definite basis. So we are asked to handle prototypes, samples and spare parts for various industries. There is also a
massive traffic in promotional and statutory documentation.
The area already accounts annually for R4 billion of output and further developments are targeted for the iron and steel, automotive, chemical and fertiliser industries.
