This weekend saw the export of Ethiopia’s first-ever shipment of refrigerated fruits and vegetables to the European market.
According to a report in the Ethiopian Monitor, the fresh produce was loaded at the Modjo Dry Port and will be transported to Europe via the Ethio-Djibouti transport corridor.
Ethiopia’s transport Minister, Dagmawit Moges, and representatives of the Netherlands embassy in Ethiopia were on hand for the occasion.
Quoted in the report, Moges said: “This is an important step to look forward and utilise the cool logistics corridor development for the export of fruit and vegetables from Ethiopia. The shipment of refrigerated fruits and vegetables has a paramount significance to boost the agricultural export sector and generate more foreign currency.”
It has been reported that Ethiopia’s total cool chain export tonnage is expected to reach three million tons in the next 10 years.
