Cargo clearing software provider Easy Clear has indicated that it has received notification from the South African Revenue Service (Sars) about the implementation of the ePenalty being extended till April 30.
It’s not the first time that Sars has accepted an industry request to push out the implementation date.
ePenalty was due to take effect on March 31.
The extensions follow a previous piloting – from September 1 to November 30 last year – of the system, which aims to curb non-submission of advance cargo loading and arrival notices.
In the notification shared by Easy Clear, Beyers Theron, director of Customs Border Operations, Ports of Entry & Customs Compliance at the revenue authority, said: “As some reporters are currently still in the process of making systems and operational changes to ensure full reporting compliance, industry had requested Sars to extend the pilot once again.”
The imposition of monetary penalties for the non-submission of cargo reports would now commence on May 1, Theron said.
He requested that reporters, in order to ensure that correspondence regarding ePenalty is correctly routed and timeously received, confirm their contact details at Sars’ offices in Durban and OR Tambo International Airport for sea and air modality respectively.
