MORE THAN 40 000 workers abandoned work at the Alang shipbreaking yard in India because of a rumour that the world was due to end last month.
The yard normally accounts for between
7 000-8 000 tons of scrap per day but it dropped to less than 500 tons. The Gujarat Shipbreakers Association says it believes that an 'anti-Alang campaign' is to blame, although they don't identify whom they think is responsible. On the not so fateful Saturday seventy ships were awaiting demolition.
